What is Pass the Parcel?

This is a classic English children’s party game. A main prize is wrapped under several layers of paper. Each different layer contains a gift. During the game the children sit in a circle and pass the parcel around with accompanying music. When the music stops, the one holding the parcel removes one layer of paper and wins the gift found in that layer, then drops out of the game. When it’s down to two players and the music stops, the winner of the main prize is the one who was not holding the parcel.

Why is it a fantastic game?

First, remember the children don’t know how many layers are wrapping the parcel, this creates suspense, and so children become fully engaged and invested in the game. Second, since there is only 1 main prize to win, children have an amazing opportunity to practice important life skills, such as managing expectations and emotional regulation, dealing with disappointment, and learning the mere fact that life is unfair and we do not always get what we want. Third, the game helps build many other skills too, namely: listening, communication, patience, hand-eye coordination, and, of course, gross motor. Fourth, it is a game that is very active and social that allows children to burn off steam and energy, so they become less fidgety and restless, which can help you in handling better the party crowd (or the classroom). Last, but not least, it is a super fun game guaranteed to bring excitement and laughs!
